MARS CLOSED-END INVESTMENT FUND (MARS FIZ) AS THE MANAGEMENT TOOL OF PORTFOLIO COMPANIES ON THE EXAMPLE OF MARS SHIPYARDS & OFFSHORE GROUP

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this document is to present an example of integration and restructuring processes carried out within MARS Shipyards & Offshore Group. MARS Shipyards & Offshore is a group of closely cooperating shipyard and offshore companies owned by the MARS Closed-End Investment Fund. The fund is managed by the MS Investment Funds Society, a daughter company of the Polish Armament Industrial Group. The aggregate value of the assets currently managed by the MARS fund amounts to more than EUR 260 million. MARS Shipyards & Offshore is formed by leading shipbuilding, ship repair and offshore production companies which include: EPG (Energomontaż-Północ Gdynia), MSR Gryfia (Szczecin and Świnoujście) and Nauta (Gdynia and Gdansk). The scope of the restructuring processes carried out by MARS FIZ is wide: mergering of shipyards from West Pomerania;, integration of the Group; property restructuring – freeing the potential of owned grounds, costs optimalization; restructuring of the employment– increasing the effectiveness of work, outsourcing; operational restructuring – rise in the income; investments in production facilities. Moreover, this document presents the strategy of MARS Shipyards& Offshore Group and the market approach and market segments (focus on 4 areas: shiprepairs & conversions, new buildings, offshore, naval.). The strategy includes 11 strategic initiatives focused on: integration of the MARS Shipyards& Offshore Group, creating efficiently managed, diversified and competitive organization and partnership/participation at the achievements of key undertakings for the Polish economy.
Design/methodology/approach –This documents presents a real business case operating on the Polish and European market.
Findings – Presented in this document business case shows that formation , restructuring and development of the capital group can be with succeess realized using the investment fund , as an effective vehicle creating a competitive advantage of the group companies on the market.
Originality/value – This document is unique because is based on a real business case, presenting an example of integration and restructuring processes in polish shipyards and offshore companies.
